Research Interests

Sebastian’s general research interest lies in solving challenging molecular puzzles. Sebastian is  driven to develop and optimize experimental tools and reagents to investigate readout and erasure of important histone ubiquitylation marks. In the Fischle laboratory, Sebastian  investigates how ubiquitylation of H3 is mechanistically connected to maintenance DNA methylation. To this end, he uses a breadth of molecular, biochemical, imaging and sequencing  techniques.

Education

2018 PhD, Georg-August-University Goettingen, Germany
2014 MSc Molecular Biology, Georg-August-University Goettingen, Germany
2012 BSc Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Jacobs University Bremen, Germany
2012 BSc Earth and Space Sciences, Jacobs University Bremen, Germany

Professional Profile

Sebastian joined the Fischle lab at the MPI-BPC in Goettingen in January 2013 as a master student. During his MSc thesis, Sebastian learned the fundamentals of in vitro chromatin reconstitution and protein mass spectrometry. He applied these during his PhD to investigate readout of histone ubiquitylation marks. Sebastian transferred to KAUST in January 2019 to further the understanding of writing, readout and erasure of ubiquitylated histone H3. He aims to connect H3ub deubiquitylation with maintenance DNA methylation mechanistically.
