PostDoctoral Fellow, Bioscience

Current

Research Interests

Kaian is  interested in understanding the mechanism by which methylation is maintained in the genome, and dissecting how the enzyme DNMT1 works in hemi-methylated chromatin.

Education

Bachelor of Science: Pharmaceutical Sciences University of Brasília, Brazil

M.Sc.: Molecular Pathology, University of Brasília, Brazil

Ph.D.: Molecular Pathology, University of Brasília, Brazil

Professional Profile

Kaian is a Brazilian native from Brasília, a city located in the very center of South America and the capital of Brazil. Since Kaian was working on his Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, he has been involved in chromatin research. After obtaining his Bachelor's degree, Kaian started a Master's and then a Ph.D in Molecular Pathology at Universidade de Brasília, which is considered one of the top 10 universities in Brazil.

During Kaian's Master's and Ph.D program, he designed and characterized peptides to bind to the acidic patch of the nucleosome in order to compete with nucleosome binding proteins and modulate chromatin architecture. To develop this project, he had to apply a plethora of biochemical, biophysical, cell-based, and in vivo techniques.

Now, Kaian is continuing his research as a postdoc fellow at the Chromatin Biochemistry Lab and is excited to join a world-class research institution, where he will have the opportunity to make high-impact science and to experience different cultures. He is looking forward to sharing his experience with others and to make the time spent here extraordinary.
